“Juice Feasting after Holiday Indulgences”

The Holidays are a time when many people overeat, indulging in less than healthy options.  They rationalize that “it is the season”, and they will get back to their healthy lifestyle on January 1st.  This overindulgence can cause unwanted weight gain and a general feeling of sluggishness, a lack of vitality. Well, since helping people feel better in their bodies is my specialty, I am pleased to offer the following tips to help you get back on track.

Juice Feasting - One of the most popular and effective ways of cleansing and detoxifying the body is by going on a juice feast.  This method of healing with freshly pressed vegetable and fruit juices was popularized in the film “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” by Joe Cross, in which Joe turned his health around and lost a substantial amount of weight by embarking on a 60-day juice fast.  I do not recommend the long term fasts that he advocates, but personally feel that anywhere from a couple of days to a week of juice feasting is adequate to reset the body to a healthier state after too many indulgences.  If you are dealing with serious illness however, longer periods of fasting may be in your favor.  Many well respected healing centers such as the Gerson Institute, Hippocrates Health Institute and Optimum Health Institute all advocate juice fasting for reversing illnesses as serious as cancer, so imagine the overall health benefits of consuming large quantities of concentrated nutrients for whatever length of time you devote to it.  Just be sure the juice is freshly made or cold pressed (not pasteurized, as the nutrients will have been compromised). I am including some of my favorite juice recipes in this issue if you have a home juicer.  I recommend using a masticating juicer (or better quality) verses a centrifugal juicer, as more nutrients are preserved and less heat produced (a source of oxidation).

Fortunately for those residing in the Santa Rosa, California area, we now have Seed to Leaf Organics to provide a variety of fresh cold pressed juices along with some of the healthiest food in Sonoma County. They will offer one-day, three-day or five-day cleanse packages with a selection of juices (see their current blends in the recipes to follow).  Some people may want to include green smoothies or green soups as well, and they work with you to customize your program. There will be five drinks a day to keep you feeling energized and hydrated. Mary Kern, the Product Development expert behind Seed to Leaf Organics says, “For those engaged in the Standard American Diet we recommend doing a one-week, two-week, or a thirty-day challenge to stay plant-based with our ever expanding menu of delightful living and cooked dishes. This is a great way for someone to actually experience and feel the difference that organic, gluten free, dairy free and meat free diets can make.”  I invite you to join me for a “Healthy Lunch and Q & A” at Seed to Leaf Organics, 25 Old Courthouse Square (corner of Santa Rosa Avenue and 3rd), Santa Rosa, CA  on Monday, January 11th from 1:00 - 2:30.  There is no cost to attend, and you may choose to order and pay for what you like from the menu.  Please RSVP to me at (831)521-8864 so I can have the restaurant plan for the number in attendance.

Optimum Nutrition for our Busy Lives

Our society is facing ever increasing rates of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and multiple forms of cancer. These top killers are all preventable (and reversible) with proper nutrition. Our bodies need good, healthy food to use as fuel throughout the day. We need to focus on eating items that provide plenty of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients (from plant sourced foods) for a steady source of energy, not resorting to processed foods and caffeinated beverages to keep us going throughout the day.
